BODEGAS NEKEAS
Navarra
In 1990, 8 families came together to unite their precious vineyards throughout the stunning Valdizarbe (valley of the stars), fiercely backing their wine-making roots in one of Spain’s finest, coolest viticultural corners. The brilliant Concha Vecino was entrusted with this project from the beginning and still carries out her work to this day, crafting a beautiful range of elegant wines that deliver immense quality for the minimal price tag (perhaps the greatest in all of Spain). The Chardonnay project blows their peers out of the water and of particular note is the valley’s unique Garnacha genetic material, which Nekeas have massal selected and grafted onto young vines to preserve its lineage. This unique red Garnacha has loose bunches of small, concentrated fruit that is perfectly suited to this cooler climate (growing up to 550 metres above sea level). ‘Cepa por Cepa’ is the young wine grown from cuttings of ‘El Chaparral’, vines over 120+ years old. These two are Spain’s most Atlantic Garnachas.
Their land is devoid of other industry (to the point that no roads criss cross the valley) with just a canal, sheep, olive groves, gnarly vines and woods making up the landscape. Climatic influences include the trifecta of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the looming Pyrenees, with cool winds keeping heat down and disease at bay. Hats off to Nekeas, theirs is a brilliant and understated project. Don’t miss their Extra Virgin Olive Oils either!
THE WINES
Cabeza, Que Tal? Blanco (Chardonnay, Viura)
This is a pitch perfect Chardonnay-driven Spanish white blend. Stainless steel tanks keep the fruit on song, driven by a fresh citrus zing. Gorgeous value.
Midnight Amber Garnacha (pink/chilled red) (Garnacha)
This night-picked Grenache soaks on skins until dawn before being gently pressed and bottled. Call it a rosé or chilled red - it is super versatile, and delicious!
Toma Tinto (Tempranillo, Garnacha)
Tempranillo and Garnacha in equal parts. The red Grenache throws seductive raspberry from the glass while the Tempranillo melds in some darker fruit and tannin, grounding the wine. This is from one of DO Navarra's finest family producers. So fresh, so good - this is one of the best red wines we've ever seen for the $$.
Bodegas Nekeas 'El Rincon' Chardonnay
This is the greatest Chardonnay we have ever tasted for the price, and one of Spain's finest versions of the noble grape. Stylistically it sits cleverly in a medium weight with beautiful, high quality oak wrapping migles effortlessly with fresh, energetic white/blush stone fruits. The whole package is dynamic, layered and refreshing with natural acidity quietly tidying up. Unreal.
Bodegas Nekeas 'Cepa Por Cepa' Garnacha
Cepa X Cepa is a cooler climate Garnacha influenced by altitude (500m) and the prevailing ‘poniente’ wind that sweeps down from the Atlantic. It is a glossy and high-toned wine with fresh cherry and rhubarb aromas. Breathy, bright and beguiling. Don't settle for any old Grenache, this is an incredible wine.
Bodegas Nekeas 'El Chaparral' Garnacha
Spain's most Atlantic Garnacha from vines 70-110 years old. On top of that, the genetic material of these vines is unique to the Nekeas Valley - this is a true, rare viticultural treasure. The depth to the fruit is remarkable as is the wines freshness. Concha Vecina (Nekeas' inimitable enologist/wine maker) handles the precious fruit lovingly and ageing takes place in her high quality ex-Chardonnay barrels. Divine, terroir driven Garnacha for a steal!
